Welcome to the GWAPI Mentorship Program (GMP)
Mission Statement
The GWAPI Mentoring Program aims to leverage the collective strength of our physician community to guide and support students across every stage of their medical journey from middle school through residency and even early career. Our focus includes mentorship in Pre-Med/BS-MD programs, Allopathic and Osteopathic medical schools (including Caribbean institutions), U.S. residencies, fellowships, and job placement in the medical field.
Mentorship Opportunities
We are seeking two categories of mentors:
1. Mentoring Executive Committee (6–8 members)
Eligibility: Active GWAPI members interested in shaping and leading the program.
Responsibilities include:
- Organizing educational events and lecture series
- Coordinating speaker sessions and speed networking events
- Managing booths at public outreach events
- Supporting logistics and promotion of the program
- Ideally includes individuals serving as program directors, coordinators, or affiliated with academic medical institutions to expand our reach
2. Student & Physician Mentors (Open Enrollment)
Support areas include:
A. Clinical Shadowing Opportunities
- Primarily during summer, but year-round where possible
- Mentors to provide: name, specialty, office location, available days/hours, and student capacity
- We’ll coordinate scheduling based on demand and location
- HIPAA-compliant consent forms and orientation will be provided
- Pre-shadowing Zoom orientation session to outline expectations
B. Research Opportunities
- Includes case reports, clinical studies, and lab research
- We’ll help identify needs (e.g., application process, student qualifications)
- Assistance provided in matching student interest with available opportunities
C. Application Support
- Guidance on personal statements, resumes/CVs, interview prep, and letters of recommendation
- Mentor involvement based on time and interest
D. Peer Mentorship
Involving medical students, residents, fellows, and college students to mentor those earlier in their paths

Arpana A. Shah, MD
Arpana A. Shah, MD, FAAD is a Board Certified Dermatologist and owner of Shah Dermatology, LLC, a private practice in Southern Maryland. She obtained her degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed her dermatology residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She has been serving the patients of Southern Maryland for the last 22 years. She has extensive experience in supporting AAPI and GWAPI. Dr Shah is honored to support the GWAPI mentoring program. A graduate of a BS/MD program, Dr Shah has experience navigating the complicated system of medical education and residency. She too has experienced BS/MD admissions with both of her children. She is passionate about helping other high school, undergraduate, & medical students, as well as residents and fellow to find opportunities for growth and advancement.
